Hawthorn Football Club is pleased to advise that it has appointed Melbourne great David Neitz as a part-time specialist key position coach for the 2015 season.

In an AFL career spanning 16 years (1993-2008), Neitz played 306 games and achieved All Australian honours twice (1995, 2002), won the Coleman Medal and Melbourne FC’s best and fairest in 2002 and was Melbourne’s leading goal kicker across seven seasons.

Neitz remains the longest-serving captain in the history of Melbourne Football Club and the first Melbourne player to achieve the 300-game milestone.

Since retiring due to injury in 2008, he has worked in stakeholder relations for Melbourne FC and Swisse Wellness, before moving across into a digital role at Swisse in 2013.

GM – Football Operations Chris Fagan welcomed Neitz’s appointment.

“We’re confident David’s experience in a number of key position roles will be incredibly valuable in coaching our younger players who are developing in those positions,” Fagan said.

“The fact that David earned All Australian selection as a centre half back in 1995 and then again seven years later as a full forward indicates he has a great deal of experience at both ends of the ground that he can impart on our younger players.

“As a 300-plus game player, we are also pleased that he will be available to provide guidance and advice for our senior players.”

“David will bring a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the team, which will complement and enhance our current coaching group,” Fagan said.

Neitz will commence in the role next Monday.
