HAWTHORN defender Josh Gibson has signed a new one-year deal to extend his career into 2016.

It is welcome news for the Hawks on the eve of the 2015 season, which kicks off on Easter Monday with a blockbuster clash against Geelong at the MCG.

Gibson, who won Hawthorn’s best and fairest in 2013 has developed into one of the league’s most versatile defenders since joining the Hawks in 2010.

He can play on both talls and smalls and even adds to the Hawks’ attacking run from defence.

It is that offensive game, combined with his partnership with fellow premiership defender Brian Lake in Hawthorn’s back six that has taken Gibson’s game to a new level.

Hawthorn Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright said it is that flexibility the Hawks love.

“Josh has been such an important part of our backline since coming across to the club,” Wright told hawthornfc.com.au

“He has been great at being able to evolve and adjust his game and it’s great for the club to have him around for another season.”

Last year, the 31-year-old averaged 21.2 disposals playing as a key defender and led the Hawks for average rebound 50s per game (3.2).

He also led his side for one percenters (nine average).

Gibson’s value to Hawthorn extends off-field too, given he has stepped up and taken on a leadership role in his six years at the club.

“Not only does he play a pivotal role for us on field but he is also a valuable asset in helping to develop some of the young defenders coming through,” Wright said.

The dual premiership Hawk will be joined this season by another defensive partner, recruit James Frawley who is likely to slot in beside he and Lake.

Gibson has played 165 career games, including 100 for the Hawks since crossing from North Melbourne via a trade at the end of 2009.

He is the second Hawk to re-sign with the club already this year, joining premiership teammate Paul Puopolo.
