RECRUITING and List Manager Graham Wright says Hawthorn is keen to retain talented young midfielder Jed Anderson, who has requested a trade from the club.

Anderson played just four AFL games this season, taking his career total to 10.

Wright said a lack of senior opportunity meant the 21-year-old was exploring other options.

“He’s a contracted player for next year, and we’ve been really open and honest with Jed,” Wright told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday morning.

“We understand there’s some frustration about him not playing at the moment, but some of that’s been the fact that when Jed was available to be picked this year that he was sore in hamstrings and things like that, so he didn’t get into some games because of those reasons.

“He’s requested to have a look and he’s spoken to a few clubs.”

Anderson’s last AFL game was in Round 6, and in the back half of the season he played an important role in helping VFL affiliate Box Hill Hawks reach a grand final.

Wright said the skilful left-footer was a “required player” and that the club wanted to keep him.

“We’ve been pretty open and honest all the way through that we see Jed as a required player,” he said.

“We’ll see what happens over the next few days, but if we don’t think it suits us, we’re pretty keen to retain him.”

The 2015 NAB AFL Trade Period begins on Monday 12 October.
