HAWTHORN star Sam Mitchell is in discussions to play on into a 16th AFL season.

The 33-year-old midfielder has been in exceptional form this season, averaging close to 30 disposals per game to again be among the Hawks’ leading ball-winners.

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson is confident Mitchell – who is closing in on 300 games and is one of five players on the club’s list over the age of 30 - can and will go around again in 2017.

The wheels are in motion, but recruiting and list manager Graham Wright said there has been no decision made as yet.

“We’ve had some good discussions with Sam and his management, but nothing is confirmed at this stage,” Wright said.

“Sam has been in outstanding form this season which has been a real positive for us.

“Things are heading in the right direction and hopefully we’ll have some good news in the near future.”
