Chris Newman takes us through every Hawthorn-listed player's performance for at VFL level for Box Hill Hawks on the weekend.

The Hawks suffered a last-minute, three-point loss to Essendon in their VFL clash at Windy Hill on Saturday.

WILL LANGFORD – 29 disposals, two goals, 11 clearances

“Will was one of our better players, if not our best player, on the day. Finished with 29 disposals but he also had 11 clearances which was really important in terms of getting the ball forward and giving our forwards an opportunity to kick a score. Not only that but he had four shots on goal himself which is elite.”

BILLY HARTUNG – 29 disposals, six inside 50s, five rebound 50s

“Billy was another one who accumulated a fair bit of the ball. Ran really hard all day, he’s got a huge engine so he provided a fair bit of link up for us. He had six inside 50s and five rebound 50s which is an indication of how hard he was working up and down the ground and that was a really good return from him.”

TIM O’BRIEN – three goals, nine marks, six tackles

“Tim was good for us. He had the opportunity to possibly clunk a few more, but he’s quite reckless in the way he flies for his marks – he’s got no fear in the air. He was a really strong target for us up forward finishing with three goals and setting up a few others as well, so we’re happy with that return from T.O”

TEIA MILES – 23 disposals, one goal

“Teia continues to impress off half back. His work rate offensively is elite, but he also goes forward and hits the scoreboard which as a backman is a real bonus. His kicking efficiency is his one wood - he breaks the lines and he had another good game for us.”

KIERAN LOVELL – 22 disposals, four clearances

“Kieran had a solid game. He’s continuing to grow and learn with every game he plays. His stoppage work is quite good; he’s still got a lot of room for improvement in that area however. Another exciting player who can break a line for us and can break a tackle really easily as he’s got a quick side-step and he uses those assets every week.”

KADE STEWART – 19 disposals, six tackles, 17 pressure acts

“Kade thrives on the contest - he finished with six tackles and 17 pressure acts – we love that he thrives on the physical aspect of the game but can also be really dangerous with ball in hand so a pretty impressive game from him.”

BLAKE HARDWICK – 21 disposals, two goals

“We were happy with Blake’s game this week. He finished with 21 disposals which is a really good return for a half forward. Took seven marks and had three shots at goal, and he’s one who is still learning his craft.”

MARC PITTONET – 15 disposals, 29 hitouts

“’Pitto’ was solid for us. He was a little bit stiff when he went forward, one of the shots on goal he had hit the goal umpire and bounced back into play. Another one he gave away a free kick, kicked the goal and was penalised 50 meters for doing so. But it’s great to see him providing an option for us up forward. His follow up work was quite good also.”

KURT HEATHERLY – 17 disposals, eight marks, five rebound 50s

“Kurt has had an outstanding year thus far and continues to put his hand up for AFL selection with the way he’s playing. He’s playing a really aggressive brand of footy at the moment, winning our pressure act totals most weeks. He’s getting his hands on the footy as well, which is a real bonus for a key defender.”

DALLAS WILLSMORE – 16 disposals, one goal

“The thing we love about Dallas is his ball use – he doesn’t waste a possession. We try to get the ball in his hands as much as possible because his left foot is a real weapon for us. Not only that, but he’s got the ability to push forward and kick goals.”

LUKE SURMAN – seven disposals, 14 hitouts

“Luke shared the ruck duties with Pittonet, he’s an athletic type and gave us first use in the middle. He’s also got really strong hands and gets around the ground to provide another tall option for us. He’s continuing to improve and make steady progress with his development.”

ZAC WEBSTER – five disposals

“Unfortunately we lost Zac to injury at half time. He started the game really well with five disposals in the first quarter and some opportunities to hit the scoreboard. He had some awareness of his hamstring, but we’re hoping he’s going to be okay to play next week.”

DEVELOPMENT

JERMAINE MILLER-LEWIS

“Jermaine played a good game, he probably had close to 20 disposals for the game and provided some real run and dash off half back so we’re pleased with the way he went.”

LACHLAN LANGFORD – four goals

“Lachie was a bit quiet in the first half but made up with a really strong second half to finish with another bag of four goals which makes eight goals for him in the last two weeks. His hands are quite good and his shots for goal are quite accurate. Both he and Jermaine are putting their hands up for VFL selection this week.

CONOR GLASS

“Conor played his first game on the weekend which we were really impressed by. He looks like quite a natural athlete and picks up the game of AFL quite well and quite easily. He’s still got a lot of development left in him, but he looks as though he plays on instinct and he loves getting the footy in his hands. We were impressed with his quick hands in tight and he looks like he could be quite a good footballer for us down the track.”
