Miles Alfred ‘Bob’ Sellers was born in St Kilda, the eldest child of Alfred Thomas Sellers and Florence Pearce. After commencing his football career with Ferntree Gully, he joined Box Hill for a season before playing in Hawthorn’s inaugural VFL season in 1925.

A prominent follower and forward, Sellers had a stand out season in 1928, when he was named captain, won the Best All-Rounder (Best and Fairest) and was equal first for Hawthorn Brownlow votes, tying with John Sharpley.

Despite retiring in 1932, Sellers returned to the Hawks to play the final round of the season in 1934, a game that he believed was his 100th for the club. Unfortunately, records would later show this game to be his 98th.

Following his playing career, Sellers remained at Hawthorn as a coach and team manager of the under-age sides, whilst also assisting with recruiting and talent spotting for the senior level.

In 1944, Sellers began a nine-year career as a VFL goal umpire officiating in 131 games.

Sellers continued his service to Hawthorn after his time as an umpire, including his overseeing of the Past Players & Officials association, and received Hawthorn Life Membership in 1956.

He was also a Timekeeper for the club with both the 1st and 2nd 18’s from 1954 until he passed away in 1971.
