Hawthorn forward-turned-defender Jack Gunston is thriving in his new role on the half-back flank.

Speaking to SEN on Tuesday morning, Gunston, who is fresh off recording a career-high 35 disposals against Fremantle on Saturday night, said he is loving the challenge of learning a new role.

“Three weeks ago, I probably didn’t see myself going to half-back and playing this role, with the young guys and Grant Birchall playing some good footy,” Gunston said.

“But then obviously Birch got injured and (Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson) threw the magnets around like he has done all year.

“But I’ve really enjoyed it so far, it’s been good.”

Full of praise for the way in which Clarkson has been able to invigorate the Hawks this season, the 25-year old Hawk believes his swap of ends has given him a greater perspective on how the game needs to be played.

“I can certainly say I have got a greater appreciation for when the boys up the ground are able to slow the ball movement down and give us defenders time to set up.

“I think what makes Clarko so great as a coach is his ability to change.

“He is always thinking, he never has the chance to switch off.”
