Hawthorn swingman Ryan Schoenmakers has signed a one-year contract extension to keep him at the club until the end of 2018.

The 26-year-old’s career has spanned nine seasons and 112 games since being selected with Pick 16 in the 2008 National Draft, and reached a pinnacle when he was a part of the 2015 premiership-winning side.

While injury has at times cruelled his career, Schoenmakers experienced a great run of form late in the season, locking down a position in the senior side since Round 14 after spending early parts of the year at VFL level.

Hawthorn Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright says the club has been thrilled with the way the versatile forward has embraced this year’s challenges.

“It’s been a tough 18 months for Ryan with injury and the competition for spots at an AFL level,” said Wright.

“But he worked really hard at Box Hill and was rewarded for that in the back half of the season.

“No matter which end of the ground we play him his endeavour to make a contest is always 100 percent.

“The way he has carried himself this year is a testament to his character, and we’re looking forward to watching him continuing the strong form he showed in the latter part of this year.”
