Review

In his first year as vice-captain of the club, Liam Shiels delivered another strong season.

Playing his 150th game against Brisbane in Round 8, the 26-year old relished the added responsibility of leadership this season.

With the departure of midfielders at the end of last season, Shiels’ on-field role underwent an adjustment as well.

Shiels responded to this by registering career-high numbers in clearances, averaging 4.2 a game to rank second at the Hawks.

The Eastern Ranges product also rated second at the club for tackles (6.1), third for disposals (21.7) and third for contested possessions (8.3).

A word from: Brett Ratten

“He has really developed a lot with the leadership role this year as the vice-captain with Issie this year. He’ll benefit enormously from that experience and those expectations.

“He had a solid season. When Liam is winning the ball in tight and then running with the footy, he is such a valuable player for us.

“His ability to play multiple roles is great. Offensively and defensively, he is so balanced in his game, which we love and that’s what we want to see again in 2018.”
