After playing in the Round 1 loss to Essendon, Ryan Schoenmakers was forced to ply his trade with Box Hill for the next three months.

The 26-year old did not make an appearance at AFL level again until after the midseason bye against Adelaide in Round 14.

Schoenmakers would go on to play every game for the remainder of the year, spending time at either end of the ground.

The swingman booted ten goals from the final ten games to pose a consistent threat in front of goals.

The South Australian was also one of only six Hawks to average at least one contested mark per game this season.

Schoenmakers signed a one-year contract extension at the end of the 2017 season.

A word from: Adem Yze

“He was probably a bit unlucky not to play more footy earlier in the year. We were playing around a lot with the balance of our forward line, with a resting ruck and contemplating how tall we wanted to be in our forward line.

“But he’s just a workhorse. He’s obviously got some things in his game that he can improve on and he’ll keep doing that. But if he keeps his workrate and his effort that he plays at every week, I can’t see any reason why he can’t just keep taking his game to the next level.

“So, hopefully he can have another really good preseason and keep being rewarded for the effort that he does put in.”
