Review

Luke Hodge played his final season at Hawthorn in 2017.

The Hawk champion announced his intention to retire at season’s end in July.

The four-time premiership player showed no signs of slowing down this year, with his form still very strong throughout his final campaign.

The 33-year old played 19 games and averaged 23.2 disposals, which is ahead of his overall career average.

Interestingly, Hodge reached a new career-high in one-percenters per game this year, averaging 4.1 to top each of his previous 15 seasons’ marks.

Hodge’s final season had a theme of grooming the likes of James Sicily, Ryan Burton and Blake Hardwick, who will look to step up in light of their teammate’s departure.

A word from: Adem Yze

“He is obviously going to be a massive loss for the footy club with his leadership and organisation down back.

“But, not just that, his form this season was also really strong. He plays at such a high standard.

“His leadership and development he did with younger blokes this year is second to none. He’s probably not the type of player that you can replace with one player, so defenders are going to have to share the load without him.”
