Hawthorn midfielder Tom Mitchell has registered a top three finish in the 2017 Brownlow Medal, polling 25 votes to place behind Richmond's Dustin Martin (36), and Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield (33, ineligible).

Mitchell earned maximum votes on six occasions, and was judged best afield in two losing matches (Round 9 v Collingwood, Round 22 v Carlton).

The former Swan's effort far exceeded his previous best Brownlow results, having polled 12 votes in both the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Skipper Jarryd Roughead and forward-turned-defender Jack Gunston were Hawthorn's next most prolific vote-getters, polling six votes apiece.
