Hawthorn has selected Box Hill Hawks Captain David Mirra with pick No. 23 in Monday night’s Rookie Draft.

The 186cm medium defender offers a strong and experienced frame with plenty of leadership experience.

The 26 year old joined Box Hill at age 19 and was quickly touted as a natural born leader. After only two seasons on the list, Mirra joined the club’s leadership group and twenty-four months later was the Captain in his own right.

He has held the position for four seasons and played in three grand finals, including the 2013 Premiership. He is also a four time VFL Team of the Year representative and was named Captain of that team in 2015.

GM - Recruiting and List Management Graham Wright congratulated David on his hard work and dedication to making it on to an AFL list.

“David has been an outstanding player at VFL level for a long period of time so we are rapt to have him on our list for 2018,” Wright said.

“He is proof that hard work and determination really pays off and that it is never too late to realise your dream of playing at AFL level.

“He has a great understanding of our structures and game play through our affiliation with Box Hill so this will be a great asset he can bring to the club.”

Mirra is one of three selections Hawthorn has made in tonight’s Rookie Draft with Changkuoth Jiath and Harrison Jones joining the brown and gold family.

Dallas Willsmore was also re-selected with pick No. 34.
