Star forward Luke Breust is confident the Hawks’ form is building at the right time of the year as they mount a charge towards September after a crushing 63-point win over the Bulldogs.

Breust, who leads the Hawks’ goalkicking with 36 this season and produced a six-goal, 24-disposal, best-on-ground performance against the Dogs, lauded the side’s ball movement through the middle of the ground and inside 50 – an area that’s been its Achilles heel in 2018.

Speaking to RSN on Monday, the triple-premiership player said the Hawks’ transition of the football was the best it’s been all season during the second half against the Dogs, as the side poured on 12 goals to two after half time.

“The flow on the footy on Saturday night was unbelievable, especially in that second half,” Breust said.

“Some of our overlap run and our hands in-close were sensational and that just means that you can move the ball so freely and it means that we can get our (opposition) defenders in positions where they hate being.”

An area that Breust says has needed improvement throughout the season, the Hawks appear to have turned the corner with their efficiency going forward, currently sitting third in the competition for inside 50s (with 830) and fifth for goals scored (196).

“We joked about it after the game that it was probably back to the form of ’13, ’14, ’15, those sorts of years,” Breust said.

“Our numbers this year in terms of inside 50 have been really strong and it probably has been that percentage of being able to convert those into scores that have let us down in multiple games so we’re still building the connection.”

The Hawks will now turn their attention to the Brisbane Lions, who they’ll face at UTAS Stadium on Saturday afternoon, eager to make amends for the 56-point thumping they received in Round 9 as they continue to build towards finals.

“We’re going to have to bring a much better attitude on Saturday afternoon down in Tassie,” Breust said.

“They touched us up and we probably owe them one from a little while back.”
