Meg Hutchins is one of the Hawks’ most experienced VFLW players.

She has played the code she loves for 16 seasons, including two years for Collingwood in the AFLW.

Taking her years of service into account, it may come as a surprise to some fans that the skillful defender has never experienced the buzz of playing on Grand Final day – let alone winning a premiership.

This Sunday, when the Hawks run out onto the newly-renamed Marvel Stadium, Hutchins will finally have the chance to achieve what she’s so been craving for well over a decade.

“16 seasons without a grand final,” the Hawks star reflects.

“I’m going to make the most of the opportunity, because clearly it doesn’t come everyday.”

Hutchins arrived at Waverley at the start of 2018, fresh off her second AFLW campaign and ready to impart her wisdom on the newly formed ‘Hawthorn’ side.

She has since been one of the club’s most consistent performers, averaging 16 disposals a game and booting four goals for the season while playing predominately in defence.

While her leadership and knowledge has been critical to the side’s rapid development, the veteran star says she’s also experienced plenty of personal growth herself.

‘I’ve been quoted before in saying that [coming to Hawthorn] is probably one of the better decisions I’ve made in my football career,” Hutchins said.

“Probably more so for my own growth and development, and for a new challenge.

“I’ve been thrilled by what the [opportunity] has been able to provide me, but then also, I’ve been able to provide a bit of leadership and an extra head out there that has experienced a lot of things.

“I’ve loved every minute of it, making new friends and long-lasting memories that I’ll have for a lifetime.”
