Hawthorn has completed its first time trial of the 2019 pre-season, with Isaac Smith cementing his status as the Hawks’ endurance king.

The 2018 vice captain crossed the line in first place for the fourth consecutive year, closely followed by Irishman Conor Nash.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the morning, young rookie Will Golds crossed the line a few seconds after in third position, just a fortnight after arriving at the club.

Physical Performance Manager Luke Boyd was quick to make note of the health and fitness levels of the group.

“We were really, really happy with how the group ran,” Boyd said.

“Everyone has come back in good shape which is gives a good base as we progress through the pre-season.”

“The time trial is there to find out where players are at when they return from their off-season, that is the number one thing.

“But from a motivational point of view, it is also a great thing for our players to strive towards improving when we test again in January.”

In addition to Nash and Golds, Boyd said there is a strong group of youth that are pressing their claims into the upper echelons of the club’s endurance stakes.

“Well, no one has been able to knock off Isaac yet,” Boyd laughed.

“A couple of other stand outs included Dylan Moore and Harry Jones. It was the first time Harry has tested with us and he ran a very, very decent time.

“Daniel Howe, James Cousins and Conor Glass were also stand outs, as well as another first year Damon Greaves – he was outstanding.”
