Box Hill Senior Coach Chris Newman reviews every Hawthorn-listed player’s performance for Box Hill in its third VFL practice match for 2017.

The Hawks were overrun by Casey in the dying minutes of Saturday's match, finishing the game 72 - 75.

Kaiden Brand

17 disposals, 1 tackle

“He had 17 disposals, seven marks and used the ball really well. He backed himself in with winning the ball back with intercept marks. He carried on his good form, after he played a good game last week and he’s now backed it up this week so he’d be happy with the way he is playing”. CN

Jack Fitzpatrick

13 disposals, 2 tackles, 31 hitouts

“He competed really hard in the ruck. Playing against Jake Spencer (Melbourne Demons ruckman) is always pretty hard as he is a pretty tall human, but Fitzy competed really hard in the middle and gave us an opportunity to win the footy. He also went forward and took a couple of marks but couldn’t hit the scoreboard. He looked lively around the ground”. CN

Luke Surman

8 disposals, 1 tackle, 10 hitouts

“It was Luke’s first game back this year after an interrupted pre-season. He has got himself into some really good condition. He moved around OK and he competed pretty hard and will look now to build on his first game”. CN

Taylor Duryea

23 disposals, 3 tackles

“Duryea played a good game. He had an outstanding first half. I think, like the rest of the boys, he didn’t really get the footy as much as he would have liked in the second half but he finished with some good numbers. His attack on the footy and his ability to compete was outstanding”. CN

Conor Glass

9 disposals, 2 tackles

“Conor was a little bit crook going into the game. He played a bit of a different role a little bit higher up the ground. He tackled and chased, and although he only ended up with nine disposals, what we get from those nine disposals is quality ball-use”. CN

James Cousins

28 disposals, 3 behinds, 2 tackles

“James Cousins played a good game again. He had 28 touches and eight clearances, which is great. He is really good in tight, he has good, clean hands and he’s a pretty tough player. He has a strong physical presence and is just a real competitor”. CN

Daniel Howe

24 disposals, 2 behinds, 6 tackles

“Similar to Cousins, he had 24 disposals and quite a few hard-ball gets. He’s a bigger body, so he used his bigger frame in the clearances. He had six tackles too so he had a pretty good game”. CN

Billy Hartung

30 disposals, 1 goal, 4 tackles

“Billy had 30 disposals and used the ball really well. He took the game on with some good run and carry. He also had nine inside 50s for us and a few rebound 50s, so that shows his workrate on the wing there. He had four tackles as well, so he competed really hard for us”. CN

Dallas Willsmore

21 disposals, 1 goal, 2 tackles

“He was sick last week, so he didn’t play. But he came back into the side and had 21 disposals. He’s a really good user of the footy, so he was quite dangerous in setting us up in attack. He took ten marks as well, so he can find space and his workrate was good”. CN

James Sicily

26 disposals, 1 tackle

“Sicily had 26 disposals, playing back predominantly. He took six marks and competed in the air really well for us. He probably had the chance to mark a few more but he just managed to get a hand in and force a contest. His disposal was elite on the day in windy conditions, which was also pleasing”. CN

Tim O’Brien

20 disposals, 1 behind, 2 tackles

“Tim O’Brien had 20 disposals and took 10 marks. He didn’t hit the scoreboard, he only kicked a behind from a couple of shots, but he had seven inside 50s and he was instrumental in setting us up. They’re really high numbers for T.O., so he’d be pretty pleased with that”. CN

Ryan Schoenmakers

12 disposals, 1 goal 1 behind

“Schoenmakers had 12 disposals. He had a couple of shots and finished with one goal. He competed in a lot of two versus one marking contests, where we were outnumbered, and forced a lot of good contests for us. His leadership, communication and energy for us on the day was outstanding”. CN

Harry Morrison

16 disposals

“Harry Morrison had a variety of roles, playing back, wing and forward, but found the footy for us, which was good. He looked pretty lively when he went forward and he competed hard when he was back”. CN

Conor Nash

10 disposals, 2 tackles

“He continues to show little bits of improvement. He is a natural competitor. He didn’t have high disposals, he finished with ten, but he defended really well and had a couple of really good spoils”. CN

Blake Hardwick

13 disposals, 1 goal, 1 tackle

“Blake played back for us. He had 13 disposals and was able to kick a goal. This is a good indication of him being willing to get high up the ground and trying to be offensive. He is still working on getting that balance between being a defender but also being an offensive option to use his leg”. CN

Brendan Whitecross

“Whitecross was a carry-over emergency for the AFL game against the Crows and so didn’t play any part in this game”. CN
