This weekend’s Towards Zero Round has special significance for VFLW captain Tamara Luke.

Luke is an exercise physiologist at Epworth HealthCare, which is one of the main hospitals for TAC clientele who require hospitalisation and rehabilitation following road accidents.

The 31-year-old is faced with the hard reality of road injuries on a daily basis.

When Luke plays in this weekend’s Round 13 match against Melbourne University she will wear a jumper with a zero on the back.

The zero represents what the TAC believes to be the only acceptable number of deaths on our roads.

“As captain, to be able to wear the number 0 and look to bring awareness to not only the Hawthorn VFLW team, but also the wider community on the importance of road safety is something I'm passionate about,” said Luke.

“Unfortunately, with my work, I see first-hand what impact road accidents have on people and their families and to be able to wear the number zero will mean a lot to me.”

Over 1,000 clubs will be involved in this weekend’s inaugural Towards Zero Round, something that Luke believes is a great initiative.

“With the figure continuing to rise each year, it's a great way to raise awareness and bring about the discussion at our club around the importance of road safety and educate everyone on ways they can make our roads safer.”

Hawthorn’s VFLW team will play Melbourne University this Sunday at Main Oval, Melbourne University starting at 2.30pm.
