In a career spanning 14 years, Dunstall played 269 games between 1985-98 and is the third highest goal kicker in VFL/AFL history with 1254 career goals. Dunstall finished his career a four-time premiership player, three-time Coleman Medallist, four-time Peter Crimmins Medallist and 12-time leading goal-kicker for the Hawks.

Captain of the Club from 1995-1998, the full-forward was named in Hawthorn’s Team of the Century in 2001 and was inducted into the Club’s Hall of Fame in 2005. After his retirement in 1998, Dunstall held the position of interim CEO in 2004 before moving onto the Hawthorn Board, where he remained until the end of 2013 when his term expired. 

Jason Dunstall oversaw the selection of Alastair Clarkson as coach & then worked as Football Director closely with Alastair in building a team that ultimately lead to the 2008, & the now famous 3-Peat 2013, 14, 15. Dunstall has played two key roles with the Club which was recognised when he was made a Legend of the HFC in 2014.

In 2024 Jason Dunstall became only the 32nd player elevated to Legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
