Hawthorn is excited to launch a partnership with headspace Syndal, the closest centre to the club’s home base at Waverley Park, reaffirming the club’s commitment to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.

The partnership with headspace Syndal complements Hawthorn’s long-standing relationship with Beyond Blue, as the partnership aims to increase the number of young people who seek support for their mental health.

Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves said the club was pleased to add to its relationship with various headspace centres throughout a significant localised region on the club’s doorstep.

Sam Mitchell speaks on his plans for Hawthorn in 2022

“The club is proud of our commitment to play our role in improving mental health and wellbeing of people in the community by reducing the stigma around mental health and increasing the awareness of support services like headspace and Beyond Blue,” Reeves said.

“We really look forward to engaging with young people in the region and it’s exciting to see the development of headspace Syndal in the City of Monash given its proximity to our home at Waverley Park.

“We acknowledge the impact the last 24 months has had on everyone's mental health and wellbeing in the community. The development of another early intervention mental health service for 12 to 25-year-olds is a positive thing for the community.”

Alfred Health’s Deputy Director Allied Health, Child, Youth and headspace Glenda Pedwell said headspace Syndal was pleased to be joining forces with Hawthorn.

“The partnership with the Hawthorn Football Club is very important to headspace Syndal,” Glenda said.

“The club is very active in the local area and has promoted mental health and wellbeing among players and the broader community.

“Sporting clubs such as Hawthorn have traditionally been great places to engage with young men about mental health and wellbeing and are now increasingly also engaging young women. Football also helps to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island players and communities around Australia.

“The Hawthorn Football Club joined the headspace Syndal Implementation Group well before the centre itself was established. The club has actively worked hand in hand with Alfred Health, local young people and our other community partners in the area.

“We are looking forward to continuing the partnership forged, to work together toward the benefit of the mental health and wellbeing of young people and their families in Syndal and neighbouring communities.”
