Hawthorn Development Coach Andy Otten says he was proud of the performances of several Hawthorn players in Box Hill's season opener on Sunday despite facing a narrow two-point loss.

“It was a bit of a heartbreaking loss for our VFL side losing by two points in a last-minute goal to Collingwood,” Otten said.

"But we had some really strong performances from our Hawthorn-listed players.”

Check out what he had to say on each of the 11 senior-listed Hawks.

Will Day (21 disposals, 7 marks, 4 clearances, 1 goal)

“Will played at half-back for most of the game, he had 21 disposals, seven marks, and even kicked a goal for us – he had a great game. He started off really strongly coming forward to defend and intercept some balls. The last quarter was a real highlight – Will imposed himself and gave us the chance to win the game with some of his efforts off half-back.”

Daniel Howe (2 goals, 15 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles)

“Howey had a unique build-up to the game, being our traveling emergency in Adelaide and then flew back late at night to play. He had 15 disposals and kicked two goals, which was really pleasing for him. He played mostly across the wing and had a good influence on the game.”

Jacob Koschitzke (10 disposals, 5 marks, 13 hit-outs)

“Kosi was also one of those traveling emergencies. He again was crashing some packs, creating a contest for us and doing everything that we needed. The forward line worked really well together, he had some unselfish plays that allowed some of the other forwards to impact the game and score some goals for us.”

Kyle Hartigan (7 disposals, 3 marks)

“Hartigan started off the game pretty strongly down in defence, taking a nice intercept mark and looking pretty sharp. As the game wore on he probably faded out of the game a little bit, especially for his high standards.”

Jai Serong (3 goals, 11 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles)

“Jai had a really impressive game, it was his VFL debut and he was able to kick three goals as a first-gamer. He looked really dangerous all game playing a high forward role where he was getting up and down the ground. He has a really good work ethic and tank to be able to do that, and then was able to convert his opportunities in front of goal. He had a great first game for us.”

Emerson Jeka (14 disposals, 4 marks, 4 hit-outs)

“Jeka had 14 disposals playing forward and a little bit in the ruck as well. It was a really solid game from Jeka, he had some nice marks as well and some flashy play. He’d mark it on the win rolling, kicking on the opposite foot and hitting a target, which is a classic Emerson play for us. He played a very unselfish game, giving off multiple goals. While he didn’t kick any, he had a strong hand in many of our goals for the day.”

Seamus Mitchell (14 disposals, 2 marks, 2 clearances)

“Seamus probably had his best game for Box Hill, having 14 touches and a real positive influence as a small forward, especially in the second half with his ability to get front and centre to contest. We’ve got Jeka, Callow and Kosi up forward, players like Seamus should be feasting on these talls. He was able to get clean, front and centre and win the ball for us."

Jack Saunders (15 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles)

“Saundo is in some really great form. He played on the wing, so we were able to see his great endurance and great speed. His footy knowledge is starting to increase, therefore he is getting more of the ball and getting better at dangerous spots for us. His ability to impact the game was great."

Jackson Callow (2 goals, 12 disposals, 7 marks, 9 hit outs)

“Callow, a young developing key forward, had 12 disposals including seven marks. He was our strong aerial threat all game. He took some really strong contested marks and looked really dangerous forward of the ball.”

Ned Long (13 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 clearances)

“Longy was a traveling emergency, and he had a bit of a quiet game for his high standards. He’s a really strong runner and endurance athlete for us, but he just wasn’t able to cover the ground – Collingwood’s speed probably played a factor in that. It was his VFL debut for us, so he’ll only learn and get better from that game."

Josh Morris (8 disposals, 1 tackle)

“Tank played down back for us, he had some really good moments finding the perimeter and a great spoil out in the wing. We’re just looking for Tank to get involved a bit more offensively for us to be able to influence the game.”
