Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell says he will be taking each week as it comes, with every game presenting a different challenge for his young side.

The Hawks are set to face Carlton this Sunday, with both teams entering the match having won their opening two games for the season.

But Mitchell said he was under "no illusions" that the challenges would continue this week against the Blues.

"Every week's a new challenge for us," Mitchell said in this week's press conference.

"We started the pre-season not knowing exactly where we'd be and that hasn't changed a whole heap to this point.

"We're by no means a finished product for the direction in where we'd like to go and where we're heading.

"From a development point of view, we're continuing to strive to get a little bit better each week and this week is going to be no different."

Mitchell said while his group have exceeded expectations in some areas so far, there was still plenty to work on as his side continues to develop.

"Some parts of our game look a bit better and are a bit more advanced then what we potentially thought, then some other parts are less so," Mitchell said.

"I think in everything we're doing with our game, we're looking to make some gains and progress."
