Hawthorn’s midfield stocks have been bolstered by the signing of Tamara Smith.

After being overlooked in a series of drafts, Smith’s work rate and ball-winning ability are what have earned her a call-up at the highest level.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been dominating for Geelong this VFLW season, ranking first in the league for total tackles (123), sixth for total kicks (189) and eighth for total disposals (252) from 11 games.

She was also recently named as the Under-23 All Stars’ MVP in their battle against the NAB AFLW Academy in May with 19 disposals, 11 tackles and six clearances.

Hawthorn AFLW List Manager Mitchell Cashion praised Smith’s defensive ability as a midfielder.

“Tamara’s pressure around the ball is elite and she is tough and competitive, despite being slightly undersized in the midfield,” Cashion said.

“She is also clearly the best tackler in the VFLW competition and she has a point to prove at this level.”

Smith’s signature adds to Hawthorn’s exciting list build which includes Bridget Deed, Zoe Barbakos, Sophie Locke, Dominique Carbone, Tegan Cunningham, Eliza Shannon, Jess Duffin, Akec Makur Chuot, Janet Baird, Tilly Lucas-Rodd, Sarah Perkins, Louise Stephenson, Tamara Luke, Tahlia Fellows, Jenna Richardson, Aileen Gilroy, Isabelle Porter, Ainslie Kemp, Catherine Brown and Kaitlyn Ashmore.
