Box Hill won a thriller on the siren against Port Melbourne on Saturday, taking home a six-point victory following an impressive comeback.

Hawthorn Development Coach Andy Otten has provided an insight into how the seven senior-listed Hawks who featured in the clash performed.

James Worpel (26 disposals, 2 goals, 8 tackles, 12 clearances)

“Worps was great for us in the inside all day, notching up 26 touches and 12 clearances including nine centre bounces. He was really sharp and clean with his hands and worked hard all day. He laid eight tackles and was able to hit the scoreboard kicking two goals for us as well.”

Connor Macdonald (20 disposals, 4 marks, 9 tackles)

“CMac played his first VFL game and this allowed him to play some inside mid time. It was great to see him get to work in there. He probably spent the first quarter getting used to the speed of the game, but after that he really got going. He laid nine tackles round the contest and then looked really dangerous when he went forward late. He was a big part of us getting the win. He had some great moments late in the game to get us some goals back in the game.”

Finn Maginness (18 disposals, 4 tackles)

“Finn played on the wing all day. He probably didn’t have the impact he would’ve liked compared to last week. But still played an important role for us, driving his legs when he had the ball in hand and running those wing patterns, and we're just wanting to nail that for him going forward. That’s where we see he’s going to get his best opportunity playing AFL.”

Jai Serong (17 disposals, 1 goal, 6 tackles, 5 hit-outs)

“Jai had his best game for the year, he competed really well all day. He was often outnumbered, but would bring the ball to ground or winning those contests. But what was most impressive was his follow-up work on the ground. Some of his ground balls were really clean and he was able to get a goal as well, which was some reward for his effort.”

Denver Grainger-Barras (10 disposals, 4 marks)

“We gave Denver a role on one of their key forwards and he won that battle throughout the day, he was much better with his intensity and effort which was great. He was most improved this week.”

Jack Saunders (8 disposals)

“Saundo is still developing nicely. He had some good moments during the game, playing mostly as a small forward so was able to provide some pressure and get to some crumbing contests. He kicked a nice goal for us too which was great.”

Fionn O’Hara (4 disposals)

“Fionn had his fourth game, again he’s still learning the art of the game and the ropes. But he has been really diligent with how he defends and uses his speed to locate his man and get to the outside which we really enjoy seeing. The next phase for him is starting to understand when to get a bit more of the footy around the ground, but that will come in time. We’re not in a rush with him at the moment.”
