GWS proved too strong against Box Hill in what was a messy, wet weather contest on Sunday.

It was a disappointing game for the Hawks, with the Giants starting out of the blocks early kicking six goals in the first quarter which helped propel them to a 31-point win.

Hawthorn Development Coach Andy Otten has given his review of how each senior-listed Hawk performed on the day.

Finn Maginness (28 disposals, 4 tackles, 5 clearances)

"Finn played the first half on the wing, and then in the second half we moved him inside. He was able to get 28 touches for us, including 15 contested, along with five clearances. He was able to get to work, but he probably didn't use the ball as much as he would've liked. He was a bit rushed with some possessions, but that was the conditions and the way the game was set up. But he responded in the second half."

Josh Ward (27 disposals, 1 goal, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 8 clearances)

"Wardy was probably our most cleanest and polished player, playing a mixture of on the wing and as an inside mid. He was able to get 27 disposals, 12 contested, 13 uncontested which is a really good balance for Wardy. He was able to get to work in the clearances and get his hands on the footy inside, which is what we're probably most happiest about."

Daniel Howe (21 disposals, 1 goal, 5 marks, 3 marks)

"We threw Howey around everywhere, including using him to help us clog up our defence. He played as a bit of an extra defender for us on ball as well. He tried his heart out the whole game. He finished with 21 touches, he was a pretty solid player."

Tom Phillips (18 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles)

"Tommy got going early and looked really sharp both on ball and on the wing - we even tried him off half back too. He finished with 18 touches and five tackles, so he was getting his hands dirty. But collectively he, Howey, Wardy and Finn just probably just got beaten by the opposition's midfield."

Josh Morris (15 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 clearances)

"Tank was pretty solid for us down back. After a bit of a quiet first half, he came to life in the second. He had nine rebound 50s from 15 touches, so he was winning some ball back for us in the defensive half and being strong down back as always."

Max Ramsden (12 disposals, 4 hit-outs)

"It was Rama's second game and he was able to get 12 touches, so we're really happy with how he's progressing. He got nine of those touches in the second half. He's going to be a forward/ruck and he was able to play both roles for us. As his frame fills out we'll get some more contests from him in the ruck, but at the moment we're really liking his running ability and movement. That stands out because it's something we haven't quite seen before from a really mobile ruckman, so we're excited by that."

Denver Grainger-Barras (11 disposals, 6 marks)

"I thought Denver was really solid down back. He had the job on Jake Riccardi, who is one of their best forwards and I thought he did really well. He toughed it out and played really well. He was able to take some intercept marks for us and patrol that defence alongside Tank."

Ned Long (7 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles)

"Ned was again quiet for his standards. He just wasn't able to get himself going and get his hands on the footy. We thought these conditions might have suited him, but he just struggled to win his own ball. So he'll get to work during the week and look at some tape with the coaches to figure out how he can get more involved in the games."

Jai Serong (7 disposals)

"Jai played forward for the first two or three quarters, but again just wasn't getting the looks he probably wanted. The type of day it was as well didn't suit, so we threw him a bit of wing and down back in the second half to see if we could get him involved."

Fionn O’Hara (7 disposals, 3 tackles)

"Similarly to the other guys, Fionn really struggled to get involved in this game, especially in the first half. The last quarter we threw him down forward and he actually looked pretty dangerous and lively. So we'll see if we can continue with that. It's only his sixth game, so he's still developing."

Emerson Jeka (1 goal, 7 disposals)

"As a key forward, Jeka struggled in the conditions as well. With the type of day it was, he just needed to win some contests, which he wasn't able to do forward of the ball."

Jackson Callow (7 disposals, 3 tackles)

"We tried Callow in defence in the first half, but the conditions weren't ideal for him playing his first game down back. The game was almost over at quarter time, so we threw him up forward in the second half to see if we can spark something to get some goals going, but the weather had set in by then and we just couldn't get anything going as a group."

... and a special shoutout to a Box Hill duo

Cal Porter (14 disposals, 11 tackles, nine clearances)

"Cal had the job on Jacob Hopper who is their best midfielder and he was outstanding for us all day. He led the way with his toughness, effort and intensity - he really stood out in this area. We would've liked the other 22 players to take a leaf out of Porter's book and the way he went about it. He had 11 tackles, nine clearances and 14 touches. He was everywhere and was our 'heart and soul' player for the game.

Ben Cavarra (15 disposals, 1 goal, 5 tackles, 5 clearances)

"Ben played up forward for us and never gave up all day. He had some really massive efforts to put some pressure on. To have 15 touches as a high half forward in these conditions is pretty impressive. He was everywhere for us, trying to promote some intensity with the other boys and he led really well."
