Coach Sam Mitchell says being able to celebrate Ben McEvoy's 250th milestone game with a win was a special moment for the captain.

Hawthorn took home a narrow seven-point victory over Gold Coast on Saturday at UTAS Stadium.

Speaking post-game Mitchell said he was thrilled for McEvoy and his family.

“I was rapt for Big Boy to be able to take that catch at the end and just have a couple of good moments that turned out to be so influential,” Mitchell said.

“For him to have his family there and be part of a win - he mentioned it to the boys after the game that it just makes it that much more special for him.”

The Hawks lead for most of the match, before they produced a goalless last quarter which let the Suns to get right within reach.

“We hung on right until the end, but we’re probably fortunate that the game didn’t go for too much longer,” Mitchell said.

“I thought our midfield had a good start to the game and we were able to put some scoreboard pressure on.

“They really came hard for a lot of the game, they controlled large portions of the game, but the start put us in a position where they weren’t able to run us down.”
