Season summary:

Serong showed strong progression across the season, so much so, he earned a senior debut late in the season and played the final three games.

The 19-year-old didn’t look out of place at the top level, booting a goal in his second game.

His call up came on the back of a string of solid performances for Box Hill in the VFL, where he impressed with his work rate, athleticism and versatility as a forward.

Best AFL game:

Serong was solid in his debut game against the Gold Coast Suns in Round 21. He finished with nine disposals and three marks, along with three tackles, as the Hawks ground out a gutsy 7-point win in Launceston.

How the coaches saw him:

“Jai really progressed as the year went on and culminated in him debuting and playing some games late in the year. He is competitive and really works hard up and down the ground and his pressure for someone of his height is very good. He’ll continue to develop his game with a good pre-season and, under the mentoring of Lewis and Gunston, he will no doubt be a real offensive threat and presence for us as he continues to strengthen his body.” – David Hale
