Hawthorn will have six new guernsey numbers for the 2023 AFLW season, with recruits Emily Bates, Greta Bodey, Mattea Breed, Kristy Stratton and Casey Dumont all nominating their numbers, while Charlotte Baskaran has changed numbers.
Bates will don the number 39 for the Hawks this season to recognise her late father’s contribution to the game in that same number.
Bodey selected number 3 for Season 8 to create her own Hawthorn legacy.
The star forward recognises the importance and history of the number in the men’s program and wants to build on that legacy in the women’s program.
Bodey’s locker buddy will be Breed, who has chosen to wear the number 4 this season.
The North Adelaide product was drafted to the Hawks with Pick 4 and wanted to recognise that with her selection.
Stratton wore the number 41 for Collingwood and Box Hill and will continue to wear it for Hawthorn.
It was the first number she got given as a child and has kept it since.
Dumont’s number was actually selected by coach Bec Goddard, as it amounts to the number of times the star goalkeeper has represented Australia.
Finally, Baskaran has returned to her childhood number of nine after wearing the number 14 in her inaugural AFLW season.
The midfielder wore the number 9 initially because it was the date of her birthday and her lucky number.Â
