Hawthorn ruck Lucy Wales will be sidelined for her team's season opener against Essendon on Saturday night.

Wales sustained a bone stress injury during the Hawks' pre-season.

However, Hawthorn AFLW High Performance Manager Olivia Knowles said a return wasn't too far away for the 20-year-old.

"She's doing really well and she'll be on track for a Round 2 return," Knowles said.

In other news, Aileen Gilroy strained her hamstring during training a couple of weeks ago.

The 30-year-old is a test for Saturday's match at Kinetic Stadium but Knowles said she is making positive progress on the track.

"She's tracking along really nicely and we expect her to integrate back into the main group this week," Knowles said.

Knowles also touched on the health of Kaitlyn Ashmore and Charlotte Baskaran, although both are expected to be available for Round 1.

Ashmore has been managing calf tightness but has integrated back into the main training group while Baskaran has recovered from a fractured finger.
