Hawthorn has pulled off a suite of last-minute trades which include three new faces joining the brown and gold, in addition to a former premiership star who has made his return to the club.

In the late hours during the final day of the 2023 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, the Hawks finalised trades to secure the services of Jack Ginnivan, Jack Gunston, Mabior Chol and Massimo D’Ambrosio, while also gaining a group of draft picks for this year and next.

Check out the details of each trade below:

Traded in:

Jack Ginnivan

Hawthorn received Jack Ginnivan from Collingwood, along with the Pies’ 2023 second-round draft selection (Pick 39), in addition to their future second-round and future fourth-round selections.

In exchange, Hawthorn has sent back its 2023 second-round draft selection (Pick 33), and its future second-round and future third-round selections.

A big Hawthorn fan in his younger years, the premiership Pie makes his way to the Hawks after booting 58 goals from 42 games.

Jack Gunston

The Hawks received Gunston, a pair of 2023 draft selections (picks No. 47 & No. 61), along with Brisbane’s future second-round pick as part of the agreement.

While in exchange, Hawthorn farewelled Brandon Ryan, as he was sent to the Lions, in addition to a pair of 2023 draft selections (picks No. 39 & No. 54) and a future fourth-round draft pick.

Gunston, a three-time premiership player with the Hawks, makes his return to the brown and gold only a season after his departure to Brisbane.

The experienced goal kicker will provide a welcome boost to a young and developing Hawthorn forward line, with 452 majors next to his name across his 242-game career.

Mabior Chol

Hawthorn received Mabior Chol and pick No. 62 in this year’s national draft from the Gold Coast Suns, in exchange for a future second-round draft selection, after receiving that pick from Brisbane earlier in the period.

Having kicked a team-high 44 goals in his first season at the Suns in 2022, the 26-year-old key forward/ruckman will look to build upon his 61-game career at the Hawks.

The 200cm big man most recently spearheaded the Suns’ VFL premiership campaign, which included a five-goal preliminary final performance, before adding four more majors in the decider.

Massimo D’Ambrosio

Hawthorn received Massimo D’Ambrosio from Essendon, in exchange for a 2023 third-round draft selection (pick No. 61) and a future fourth-round pick.

D’Ambrosio has burst onto the scene for the Bombers in his first season and a half, playing a number of eye-catching games after being recruited via the 2022 mid-season draft.

From half-back to half-forward, the left-footer's run and carry has been used in several different roles for Essendon across his 16 games to date.
