Hawthorn forward Sam Butler will miss the rest of the 2024 AFL season after undergoing surgery on a broken leg.

Butler was taken from the field during the third quarter of Box Hill's match against Sydney at Fenjiu Stadium on Sunday after suffering the injury.

General Manager of Football Rob McCartney said the 21-year-old underwent surgery on Monday.

"Whilst Sam’s injury yesterday was serious, I'm pleased to report that his surgery today was a success," McCartney said.

"Unfortunately he has an extended recovery and rehab period ahead of him, but we are extremely confident Sam will make a full recovery.

"Sam is a much loved member of our playing group and his teammates are rallying closely around him. We will all be there to support him through this.”

Butler has played 19 games across three seasons since joining the Hawks as Pick 23 in the 2021 national draft.
