The Box Hill Hawks VFLW side fell to a strong Williamstown outfit, who were eager to secure a spot in the top six ahead of the final round of the home and away season.
Williamstown burst out of the gates with a dominant first quarter, setting up a lead that proved just too much for Box Hill’s late surge in the final term. The Seagulls held on for an 8-point win, with the final scores reading 5.5 (35) to 3.9 (27) at DSV Stadium on Sunday.
Williamstown displayed slick ball movement in the opening term, slotting three early goals to put Box Hill on the back foot. The Hawks registered their first major in the second quarter through the returning Mia Zielinski, who was a strong presence up forward all afternoon. However, Box Hill’s inaccuracy proved costly, kicking 1.8 across the first three quarters, while Williamstown made the most of their opportunities with a clinical 5.4.
In familiar fashion, Box Hill came out swinging in the final quarter and began to take control of the game. Two brilliant goals from Gabby Collingwood and Rosie Dillon gave the Hawks a late spark and a glimmer of hope, but it ultimately wasn’t enough, as Williamstown managed to hold on and secure the win.
Some of the standout performers on the day included Matilda Van Berkel, who led all players with 21 disposals. Rosie Dillon also impressed, finishing with 14 touches and an outstanding 13 tackles, showcasing her trademark pressure around the contest.
With the loss, the Hawks slip to fourth on the ladder. They’ll look to bounce back after a week off with an exciting Friday night clash against Carlton at IKON Park on August 1st. Make sure to get down and support the girls in what promises to be a fantastic opportunity under lights, in the last game of the home and away season.
