Worpel, a future star

Worpel gets rising star nom James Worpel has impressed over the past few weeks and was recognised with a NAB Rising Star nomination for Round 21.

The Hawks have registered back-to-back Rising Star nominations, with dynamic youngster James Worpel taking out this week’s honours.

Worpel had an impressive game against the Cats, managing 23 disposals, five marks, eight tackles, 17 pressure acts and four clearances in a rounded performance.

Since arriving at the club via Pick 45 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, the 19-year-old has captured the attention of fans with his gutsy, hard style of play.

He debuted in Round 6 against St Kilda, playing three games before returning for a stint at VFL level.

Worpel’s breakout game came in Round 18 against Carlton, when he collected 32 disposals and 10 score involvements, helping his side to a clinical 72-point victory.

A fortnight later, he helped to sink the Bombers with an important late goal.

GM-Football Graham Wright says the club has been happy with the way Worpel has slotted into the senior line up.

“We’re really pleased with how James has performed across the last month,” GM-Football Graham Wright said.

“He’s looking comfortable and confident at AFL level, and he’s performing his role for the team.

“It’s great to see a number of young guys stepping up and grabbing their opportunities, and we’re looking forward to seeing their continued development in the coming weeks.”

Worpel becomes Hawthorn’s second Rising Star nominee for the 2018 season, following on from Harry Morrison’s nomination just last week.
