The Rundown

Sitting just outside the top eight at the start of the round, Hawthorn desperately required a win in this Round 18 clash to keep its finals hopes alive. Paul Puopolo kicked the first goal of the game at the nine-minute mark of the first term and the result was never in doubt from thereon. Leading by 27 at quarter time, 47 at the main break and 42 at the final change, the Hawks put the pedal to the metal in the fourth quarter to finish 72-point victors.

The Star

Tom Mitchell had arguably the best game of his Brownlow Medal campaign in this one as he recorded a clear game-high 46 disposals and two goals. Mitchell was simply unstoppable as he helped engineer the Hawks’ big win, thoroughly deserving the three votes from the umpires.

The Moment

From the nine-minute mark to the 16-minute mark of the first quarter, the Hawks piled on four goals straight. The onslaught helped the side to a 27-point lead at the first break with the Blues failing to register a score in the opening term. From the Bronx cheers that came from the Carlton faithful after their side recorded its first goal a few minutes into the second quarter, it was clear the game was already somewhat decided.

The Coach

"It was important for us. We were average last week and we needed to bounce back and play a better brand of footy. In terms of what we wanted to get out of the game, we were pleased that we got the win, but the young fella Worpel came in and made a positive contribution." - Clarkson
