Hawthorn midfielder Isaac Smith has backed Ben Stratton to learn from his mistakes after a weekend in which the Hawks captain faced public scrutiny following his actions in Friday night’s game.

Stratton will face the tribunal on Tuesday night on account of two charges laid against him by the match review panel.

Speaking to a press conference on Monday, Smith reiterated Stratton’s disappointment in his actions on Friday night but affirmed the playing group’s support of their skipper.

“We love Stratto and we love how he plays on the edge…but sometimes when you play on the edge, you make mistakes,” Smith said.

“He’s come out and admitted that’s not the way he wants to go about it.

“As a club, it’s not how we want to go about it as well.

"I think enough’s been said. He's got the tribunal tomorrow night and they'll deal with it there."

Asked what Stratton’s reign as captain had been like since his appointment in February, Smith was complimentary.

“He has been brilliant.

“We are fortunate to have him, and I consider myself lucky to have played my whole career with him.”
