Speedy Hawthorn defender Bailey Macdonald has inked a three-year contract extension, tying him to the Hawks until at least the end of 2029.

The new deal follows a breakout campaign for the 22-year-old in 2026, playing the most games in a single season following his three-year career to date.

Making 14 appearances this season, he averaged 12.1 disposals and 3.1 tackles per match, with the latter stat ranked elite for his position.

Macdonald’s career-best performance came in Round 19 against Richmond, where he had 18 disposals, five marks and four tackles.

The versatile defender has now played 22 games for the Hawks after he was drafted with Pick 51 in the 2022 National Draft.

Hawthorn National List & Recruiting Manager Mark McKenzie said:

“After eight games in his first two seasons, Bailey smashed through that number to play 14 games in 2026, including two key finals.

“Often tasked with shutting down some of the opposition’s most dangerous small forwards, Bailey demonstrated his continued development and competitiveness as a versatile defender, whilst also showcasing his offensive running power.

“We’re delighted Bailey is continuing his journey in the brown and gold and very excited about what his future holds.”
