Father-son Hawk Calsher Dear has turned his back on rival interest to recommit to Hawthorn for a further two seasons.

The 21-year-old’s new deal ensures he remains in the famous brown and gold until at least the end of 2028, the same colours worn by his late father, 1991 Norm Smith Medallist Paul, several decades ago.

Selected with Pick 56 in the 2023 National Draft, the 195cm forward burst onto the scene in his debut campaign of 2024 with 25 goals from 17 appearances, including a three-goal haul in his first-ever final.

Despite injury interrupting the majority of his 2025 season, Dear fought his way back to play a further nine games in the back half of the year, including another final.

The emerging tall continued his steady development in 2026, adding a further five games at AFL level, in addition to playing a crucial role in Box Hill’s VFL premiership run last month, where he averaged three goals and five marks per game.

National Recruiting and List Manager Mark McKenzie said:

“We’re really pleased that Calsher has recommitted to Hawthorn; he remains an important part of what we are trying to achieve as a club.

“Following his debut season, Calsher showed us all the special talent that he is, but as a key tall at 21 years of age, we’ve needed to be patient with his progression.

“Having battled several injuries over his first three seasons in the system, we are very excited about what the future holds for Calsher with a strong pre-season under his belt and greater continuity into 2027 and beyond.”
