Hawthorn’s VFLW side suffered a heartbreaking loss, going down to the Southern Saints by just three points on Saturday at Box Hill City Oval.

It was a gloomy day with the wet weather making it hard for both sides to hit the scoreboard.

The first major for the game didn’t occur until half-way through the second quarter after a free kick was given to Fiona Steiert. This goal put the Saints in the lead by six points heading into half time.

The sides continued to fight it out in the cold in the second half, with Hawthorn’s defence playing a huge role in keeping the Saints to just two points in the third quarter.

Heading into the fourth term, the game was up for grabs, with only seven points the difference. After a goalless first three quarters for the Hawks, Phoebe McWilliams kicked a beautiful set-shot goal to get them within one point.

Hawthorn demonstrated its ‘never give up’ attitude registering another goal only moments later thanks to a huge boot from Emily Gilder. This gave the Hawks their first lead for the day and left supporters on edge with only half a quarter left in the game.

Despite this late break for the lead, the two goals weren’t enough, with the Saints scoring what turned out to be the winning goal in the dying moments of the game.
