Hawthorn Football Club and BankVic are passionate about recognising the ordinary people doing extraordinary things in their communities. BankVic is the bank for Police, Health and Emergency Services, and will present a champion from the Emergency Services sector to be celebrated at each Hawthorn home game, with their story to be shared via hawthornfc.com.au.

In this spotlight this week is….

Matt Shepherd.

Matt has worked at Ambulance Victoria for the past 20 years.

He is an intensive care paramedic who is currently working with Air Ambulance on its fixed-wing planes and helicopters.

In addition to his role with Ambulance, he also teaches both postgraduate and undergraduate students at Monash University – teaching the Intensive care course, the Graduate certificate in Aeromedical retrieval and the Bachelor of Paramedicine.

He has taught and mentored both for the on-road services as an Advanced Life Support and intensive care paramedic as well as in his role at Air Ambulance.

Shepherd says he is attracted to the industry because of its challenging but rewarding lifestyle.

“It’s a profession I’ve always been interested in for a long period of time,” Shepherd said.

“To help people during those moments of severe accidents and injuries makes it a really rewarding job.

“Every day is a new experience so I can never say that I don’t enjoy going to my job.”

Hawthorn will be celebrating the inaugural Emergency Services match against Collingwood this Friday night at the MCG. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 7.15pm to witness an exciting pre-match ceremony.

The BankVic Emergency Services Interactive Fan Zone will be open from 4.30pm.
