To help us celebrate Sammy Sunday, we thought we’d take a look back at Mitchell’s best three games in the brown and gold.

Do you think we’ve got it right?

Round 5 2009 vs West Coast

40 disposals, eight marks, nine rebound 50s

It’s 2009 and Hawthorn, on their premiership defence, had only managed one win from their opening month of the season. Captain of the club, Mitchell understood his responsibility to lift and performed accordingly. His 36 uncontested possessions highlighted the skipper’s work ethic on the day and were enough to register him in the record books, with only five players ever recorded more in a single game than Mitchell in this 18-point win over the Eagles. Mitchell would later to go on to win his second Peter Crimmins Medal at the end of the 2009 season.

Grand Final 2014 vs Sydney

33 disposals, nine marks, nine tackles and seven clearances

Despite winning the 2013 Grand Final over Fremantle, there was something extra in the rematch against Sydney in 2014. Not only did his side fall to the Swans in the 2012 premiership play-off, but Mitchell also delivered a quieter performance than he would have hoped for in his Brownlow year. Of the five Grand Finals that the midfielder played in across his career, his effort in 2014 takes the cake as the best of them all. His nine tackles and seven clearances were both game-highs as he helped the Hawks to a back-to-back flag.

Round 4 2016 vs St Kilda

44 disposals, 10 clearances, four marks and three tackles

The 2012 Brownlow Medallist’s career-best disposal tally came in this three-point win over St Kilda in 2016. Earning three Brownlow votes for his illustrious outing, the four-time premiership player was everywhere in this dominant performance. It was the on-baller’s best game of his final season in the brown and gold and one that exemplified the workman-like brand of footy that propelled him into becoming a household name.
