Chris Newman and Max Bailey will take on new coaching roles for the Hawks in 2019.

Newman, senior coach of Box Hill’s recent premiership-winning side, will step into an assistant coaching role with Hawthorn, while Bailey will take over as senior coach of Box Hill.

Both players celebrated illustrious individual careers. Newman retired from Richmond in 2015 after 268 games and four seasons as captain while Bailey overcame three knee reconstructions in his 43 games for Hawthorn, before retiring as a Premiership player at the end of the 2013 season.

“Chris and Max have been fantastic coaches for us over the last couple of years and we’re rapt we’ve been able to promote from within our club and elevate both of them into new roles,” said GM – Football Graham Wright.

“They are both exceptional people and coaches who have a great deal of knowledge and experience from their playing careers that has been vitally important in helping our players develop, both on and off the field.”

Newman coached the Box Hill Hawks in last month’s victorious Grand Final against Casey, and in 2017 was named coach of the league’s Team of the Year with the Hawks finishing second on the VFL ladder.

Bailey began his coaching career with Richmond in 2014-2015 as a skills coach and spent six months volunteering in a remote village in Tanzania before returning to Hawthorn in 2016 as a development coach.

“Chris did a great job running our VFL program and their recent flag highlights how his hard work has paid off,” Wright said.

“Max is a much loved figure around our football club. What he went through and overcame as a player, coupled with the work he’s done away from football, has made him a well-rounded person and coach. We know Max will do an excellent job as senior coach for Box Hill.”
