Hawthorn Captain Ben Stratton has been named our Round 1 Nissan Weekly Warrior for his performance in the side's win over the Brisbane Lions on Sunday.

Lions livewire Charlie Cameron threatened to be a game-winner for his club pre-match, but Stratton was able to nullify the 2019 All Australian's impact and instead put his side in the winning position.

Hawthorn Director of Coaching Brendon Bolton said the reliable defender did the simple things right in executing his task.

"Our warrior for Round 1 is our Captain Stratts for demonstrating the importance of ‘playing a role’ on Cameron," Bolton said.

"Stratts was able to minimise his influence by winning contests and smart defensive positioning.

"Most importantly, the stat sheet doesn’t show that he was still leading others with organisation and voice."

Stratton kept Cameron to single digit possessions, a fact that could only be said in four of the goalkicker's 24 outings for the Lions in 2019.
