Hawthorn Football Club is pleased to announce Brett Ratten will join the Club for the 2013 season as an assistant coach.

Ratten served as Senior Coach at Carlton Football Club from mid-way through 2007 until the end of 2012.

Prior to that, he held the head coaching role at Norwood Football Club in the Eastern Football League’s second division, and spent two years as assistant coach at Melbourne Football Club.

Hawks Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson was delighted to announce Ratten’s appointment to his coaching team.

“Brett is an excellent addition to our coaching line-up and will bring a great deal of experience and coaching nous to our Club,” Clarkson said.

“With Leon’s recent departure, it’s pleasing that a coach of Brett’s calibre can step in immediately and I’m sure he will complement our team of coaches well,” he said.

Ratten, 41, said he was thrilled to be joining the Hawks.

“It’s an honour to join the Club and I’m really excited to have the opportunity to work with Alastair and the other assistant coaches,” Ratten said.

“I really respect how they play the game and I see this as a great opportunity for me and one I’m really looking forward to,” he said.

Ratten enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Carlton Football Club, representing the Blues in 255 games between 1990-2003. He was part of Carlton’s 1995 premiership team, captained the club from 2002-2003 and is a three-time best-and-fairest winner, and two-time All-Australian.

He will commence his new coaching role with the Hawks in November.
