CEO Justin Reeves has penned the following letter to members...

Dear Members,

Even though we are separated by thousands of miles, rest assured the health and safety of you all remains front of mind for all of us in the hub. To our Victorian members, you are never far from our thoughts and I often think how much I miss the MCG and the feeling of walking into that hallowed stadium, knowing you have thousands and thousands of fans behind you.

This is not the first time the club or its members have faced adversity. History has proven that Hawthorn people are tough and that we can do what needs to be done to get through tough times. I have no doubt that spirit runs strong among our members and that you are all tapping into your reserves to navigate this incredibly challenging time.

I hope that the result of the past weekend brought some relief to you all. The relentless spirit of Hawthorn has never been so obvious as in the last month. When many had given up on us and were calling for panic stations, in the Hawthorn way we held fast and fought to find a solid victory. We know that it was only one win, but if we bring the attack, the intensity, and the endeavour you saw on Friday, to every game from here on out we will be right in every game. Hopefully, the coming weeks can continue to highlight the emergence of a new wave of Hawthorn talent. Will Day’s first AFL goal, the goal that swung the momentum our way last Friday, was by far the moment of the match for me and I can’t wait to see many more stepping up to the big stage in 2020.

Normally our match up against Carlton would have seen us play for the David Parkin medal. Given the quarantine restrictions we are currently operating under both clubs agreed not to award the David Parkin medal in 2020, but rest assured, it will return. A Legend of our club, David Parkin’s legacy is woven throughout so many parts of Hawthorn and it is an honour to play for this medal each year. We look forward to its return in 2021.

We have two games left to play in Perth and the AFL have just announced the Round 13 fixture which will see the Hawks head to South Australia to take on Port Adelaide on Saturday 22 August at 4.35pm AEST.

We remain optimistic that we will play games in Tassie at some point this season. This is, of course, completely depending on it being deemed safe for us to do so by the Tasmanian government and health authorities. Tasmanian has done an incredible job at controlling the virus and we would never put that in jeopardy. Our enthusiasm to get to Tasmania is tempered by the realities of the current situation we find ourselves in and will only occur with the full support of the government.

We are now 12 days into our fortnight of quarantine in Perth. We have been well provided for during our stay here and we continue to try and find ways to bring a bit of ‘home’ to the hub. On Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending an early 21st birthday for Dylan Moore. Everyone in the hub came together to celebrate Dylan, topped off by the win the night before. Dylan’s parents were with us in a digital sense and sent through some very heartfelt speeches to mark the occasion. It was a fitting celebration for a very fine, young man.

We continue to work through what the remainder of the season looks like, while also keeping our eye on the future and setting plans in motion for 2021 and beyond. We need to strike a very precise balance this year between being well-prepared for the future while remaining agile enough to respond well to the ever-changing landscape of the present season.

It requires a team effort to ensure our club remains well placed for the future. This is something we take immense pride in at Hawthorn and task that requires the dedication of our staff, players, coaches, members and partners. We want to bring you the wins and the joy that comes with them. It is imperative to us that we remain connected to and in communication with our members.

Over the past months, we have offered our members exclusive behind the scenes access. This week you will have exclusive access to Sam Mitchell and James Worpel’s match review and Graham Wright and I will be available to you via Facebook live at 12.30pm AWST (2.30pm AEST) to answer any questions you may have and I very much look forward to hearing from you then.

Go Hawks!
