Hawthorn defender James Sicily has been placed on the club’s long-term injury list as he continues his recovery from a knee reconstruction.

Sicily’s 2020 campaign was brought to a premature end when he ruptured his ACL late in Hawthorn’s Round 12 match against West Coast in August last year.

Despite Sicily making strong progress in his rehab journey so far, the club won’t take be taking any risks with the talented backman.

“We made the decision in consultation with the club’s medical staff to move Sis onto the long-term injury list,” Head of Football Rob McCartney said.

“Sis will continue to work diligently on his rehab and be ready to return to full training when pre-season for 2022 comes around.

“This decision also opens up another spot on our list. With the mid-season rookie draft coming up on Wednesday, we now have the ability to make two selections if we see fit.

“There’s lots to play out in the next 24 hours, but it now means recruitment team to have the added flexibility to assist in their decision making.”

Hawthorn currently holds Pick 2 in the 2021 NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. The draft will take place in a live virtual broadcast on Wednesday 2 June from 6.30pm AEST. Fans can tune in via the livestream at afl.com.au.
