Hawthorn’s VFLW side has secured its third win in a row, narrowly defeating Casey Demons by three points on Saturday at Box Hill City Oval.

With the strong winds and rain settling in during the first quarter, both sides found it hard to hit the scoreboard. It wasn’t until half way through the term that Phoebe McWilliams registered the first goal of the day. Hawthorn’s defence were also able to keep the Demons scoreless, putting the home side in a good position heading into the second quarter.

However, Casey were quick to hit the scoreboard in the second term, managing a goal within minutes of the first bounce. As the rain started to get heavier both sides continued to struggle in front of goals, until McWilliams once again hit the scoreboard, putting the Hawks 11 points in front at the major break.

The sun began to peak through the clouds for the second half as Casey started to fight back with a goal from Harriet Cordner. Captain Tamara Luke was able to convert after a huge mark in front of goals, pushing the Hawks’ lead out to 12 points at the final break.

The Demons were not giving up and kept coming in the final term. Hawthorn’s supporters were once again left on edge as Casey kicked a goal with only minutes to go, bringing them to within three points of the Hawks.

Hawthorn’s defence had a tough few minutes on their hands as the ball continued to stay inside Casey’s forward 50. They were able to withstand the opposition’s pressure and hold them off until the final siren, breathing a sigh of relief as they secured their win at 3.7 (25) to 3.4 (22).

The Hawks will head to Trevor Barker Oval next week, Sunday 18th August, to face the Southern Saints at 12:00pm.
