Box Hill returned to the winners list in Round 17 with a 12-point victory over Richmond at Box Hill City Oval.

Senior Coach David Mirra said it was a tight tussle with the Tigers, with many good signs, but plenty to work on moving forward.

“Our second meeting with Richmond was very similar to our first, a tight, hard-fought contest for the entire game,” Mirra said.

“We set a strong tone with a great first quarter, but our intensity dipped in the second. While the game was evenly balanced after half-time, it was pleasing to see the team execute a strong final term to seal the victory.

“Our high volume of inside-50 entries was encouraging, improving our conversion rate on those opportunities remains a key focus.”

Finn Maginness (35 disposals, 10 marks, seven clearances)

“Finn worked really hard all game as an inside mid to record 35 possessions, seven clearances and seven inside 50’s. His running to support our defence and then to link up in the chain and stay involved was really impressive.”

Sam Butler (One goal, 27 disposals, 11 marks)

“Worked in tandem with Maginness as an inside mid. Finished with 11 marks, which speaks to his ability to run and spread to get open and be an option. Was one of our main clearance players and created turnovers by good defensive positioning. Kicked the sealer late in the game.”

Bodie Ryan (24 disposals, five marks, four intercept possessions)

“Defensively very good and competed like he always does, tough and doesn’t give an inch to his opponent. Offensively, he showcased his weapons taking the game on with his foot skills and setting up attacks. He still has room to go to another level to be even more damaging on offence through his positioning.”

Aidan Schubert (Two goals, 19 disposals, six marks)

“A big step forward for Schuey. He has had a consistent year to date, and this performance was one of his best. He mixed his position between forward and ruck. He had a big last quarter standing up in big moments with contested marks and then outrunning his opposite ruckman to stretch him forward and kick a goal. 19 Possessions and two goals for a big man is a very impressive output.”

Cam Nairn (One goal, 19 disposals, 11 marks)

“An excellent game playing on the wing and forward. A highlight of Cam’s game this week was his aerial work and contested marking. He looked really strong in the air, getting back defensively and chopping out in the air. He had some terrific attacking plays where he worked really hard to create outnumber and get a few possessions in one chain.”

Matt LeRay (16 disposals, seven marks, three contested possessions)

“Back to playing his best football now he has some continuity in his role and just being out there playing more minutes and getting more experience and confidence as the weeks go on. His defensive work was terrific often causing turnover, his positioning was good as a wingman and he was dangerous with the ball.”

Calsher Dear (Two goals, 14 disposals, seven marks)

“Was pleasing to see Calsher launching at high balls and taking contested marks and kicking goals from 50m. He played as a forward and his intensity was very good, and he created a number of contests. Kicked two goals, should have had a few more.”

Cody Anderson (13 disposals, five marks, four clearances)

“Yet again, Cody’s pressure was very good, laying five tackles. Had some good opportunities on goal from set shot but unfortunately missed that if he converts turns into a pretty good day for a small forward.”

Max Beattie (Nine disposals, five marks, three inside 50s)

“He played as a high half forward and then in the last quarter he was positioned as a half back. His running power is very good even after his ankle sprain. Didn’t get a large amount of the ball, but when he did he made his possessions count and used it really well.”

James Blanck (Eight disposals, four marks, two tackles)

“Played three quarters of game time this week as he continues to build his loads up. He was able to showcase his weapons this week in beating his man but also taking intercept marks. He set up well behind the ball working with the other defenders to keep Richmond to a low score.”

Jaime Uhr-Henry (15 hitouts, seven disposals, five tackles)

“Arguably Jamie’s best game for the season. He was getting over the top of his opponent at centre bounce, he spread well from contest, and he worked hard defensively to sit in the hole and spoil the ball or intercept mark. His intensity when the ball was in his area was good with clean hands and tackles.”

Matt Hill (One goal, five disposals, five tackles)

“Started the game hot kicking the opener but then found it tougher to get going after quarter time. He still managed to get to the front and centre spots for crumbs but couldn’t quite get into space.”
