Box Hill are set for a Preliminary Final after taking a 13-point victory over Werribee in last weekend’s Qualifying Final.

Senior Coach David Mirra said it was a great game of finals football with multiple momentum swings.

“Whilst the game was a bit of a wrestle and Werribee owned territory and inside 50 count, we were able to ultimately make the most of our chances being really damaging and hitting the scoreboard,” Mirra said.

“We were able to extend our lead to 30 points throughout stages of the game, however let Werribee back into the game. Being down at 3 quarter time was a challenge, however the start of our fourth quarter was exceptional which allowed us to create enough of a lead to win the game.”

Mirra summarised the performance of each AFL-listed Hawk below.

Ollie Greeves (One goal, 26 disposals, seven clearances)

“Playing in his first final of senior football, Oli was terrific. He won seven clearances, six inside 50’s and goal. He looked really composed with the ball and made smart decisions.”

Finn Maginness (26 disposals, seven clearances, six marks)

“Part of our midfield brigade, Finn was instrumental in getting to contest to create an outnumber. He was tough around stoppages winning first possession and distributing.?

Henry Hustwaite (26 disposals, 10 clearances, three tackles)

“Team high 10 clearances, Henry was clean around the contest and tough over the ball with 13 ground ball gets and 17 contested possessions.”

Matt Leray (24 disposals, six intercept possessions, five marks)

“Like Ollie, he was also playing his first final of senior football. He looked really good. He got his wing patterns right and was able to win some intercepts in the back 50 and help us rebound.”

Calsher Dear (Four goals, eight disposals, four marks)

“Calsh was outstanding and made the most of his opportunities. He took some strong marks inside 50 and converted to kick 4.2. The highlight being his snap from the boundary. A great start to his finals campaign.”

Will McCabe (23 disposals, nine marks, three clearances)

“Executed his role on the wing well. He took nine marks and had six inside 50’s. His ability to run hard to help our defenders on the last line was a standout and then he was able to join in on handball chains offensively to help with our transition.”

Cam Nairn (One goal, 23 disposals, nine marks)

“Cam played as a forward and on the wing. In his first final, he had some big moments. He was able to generate a team high eight inside 50’s, three score involvements and a clever snap goal.”

Sam Butler (Three goals, 23 disposals, five tackles)

“Huge impact on the game overall. He played as a forward and midfielder. His pressure inside 50 laying five tackles was a standout allowing us to create opportunities. He got us going in the last quarter with the first two goals to give us the momentum and the lead finishing with 3.2 for the game.”

Flynn Perez (20 disposals, five marks, four tackles)

“First game back in 5 weeks for Flynn. He had a terrific first half where he closed space down quickly to spoil or tackle and his disposal was good going at 95%. Didn’t have as big of second half, but still regaining his fitness.”

Jack Dalton (One goal, 16 disposals, two tackles)

“Played as a forward and brought his signature run and used it well. He was able to run his patterns well linking up with defenders and then getting forward offensively to help transition the ball. Kicked a goal from a forward 50 stoppage with good positioning.”

Noah Mraz (14 disposals, 10 marks, six intercept possessions)

“First game back for Noah. He hasn’t missed a beat. He played a combination of defender and second ruck. He got going straight away and was back to his best. He was intercepting and marking everything and refused to let his opponent win any football. Had some very important 1v1 wins and like the other defenders really kept us in the game as the opposition had 67 inside 50’s to our 48.”

Max Ramsden (One goal, 13 disposals, 12 hitouts)

“Thought Ramma had an outstanding game. He played mainly as a forward and did some ruck work in the second half. He took some really strong contested marks, put blocks on for others and was able to hit the scoreboard.”

Bodie Ryan (13 disposals, five marks, five intercept possessions)

“His 1v1 defending is really good. He had some solid tough moments and competed hard. He had a tough matchup and we didn’t help him at times with the way we defended the ground.”

Matt Hill (One goal, 13 disposals, five tackles)

“One of the best goals I’ve ever seen in the first quarter. You just cannot tackle him. He was terrific and impacted the game heavily. Very exciting player that can break a game open in five minutes.”

Ned Reeves (One goal, 36 hitouts, 12 disposals)

“Ned was terrific as he battled an injury on the day that occurred in the first quarter. He had a very good match up all day with the Werribee ruckman, Kuol Mun. He still managed to collect 36 hitouts and kick a very important goal in the last quarter. His centre bounce work in the first half was exceptional which allowed us to win the ball and get out to a 30-point lead. We are hoping for a very speedy recovery for Ned and that he can be back out there and take place in more finals football.”

James Blanck (11 disposals, seven intercept possessions, six marks)

“At his best on the weekend winning ‘Stang of the day. Blancky, like Noah was marking everything that came his way. He had a team high seven intercept possessions and then used the ball really well to rebound from our back half with 100% kicking efficiency.”

Aidan Schubert (One goal, seven disposals, three marks)

“Limited opportunities for Schuey as we only managed 48 inside 50’s, however he still had chances to kick a few goals ending up with 1.2. His running power to get up the ground is still really good and his contested marking is a weapon.”
