Hawthorn youngsters Sam Butler and Aidan Schubert have been traded to Gold Coast after the club struck a deal with the SUNS on Monday as part of the 2026 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period.

As part of the deal, the Hawks gain Gold Coast’s 2028 first-round, 2027 second-round, and 2028 second-round selections, while farewelling Schubert, Butler, Hawthorn’s 2028 first-round pick, and a 2027 third-round selection which is tied to Gold Coast.

Selected with the 23rd Pick in last year’s draft, Schubert suited up for one senior game during his time at Hawthorn.

Butler played 33 games during his five seasons at the club after he was drafted with Pick 23 in the 2021 National Draft.

Hawthorn National Recruiting and List Manager Mark McKenzie said:

“While Aidan and Sam have made great contributions to our football club, this was the best outcome for all parties involved.

“As we bring other players into our system, it will inevitably lead to players seeking greater opportunity elsewhere.

“After negotiating the appropriate terms with Gold Coast as well as Sam and Aidan’s management, we were able to reach a deal which strengthens our draft capital in the years to come.

“We’d like to thank Sam and Aidan for their service to Hawthorn and wish them the best in their next chapters.”
