The Hawks have signed Darren Minchington to a one-year rookie contract as part of the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP).

Following Will Golds’ tragic knee injury in a Box Hill practice match on Saturday, Minchington will replace the 19-year-old’s spot on the Hawthorn list with Golds to be placed on the club’s long-term injury list.

After being delisted by the Hawks at the end of last year, Minchington continued to train with the Hawks over the pre-season in pursuit of a chance to earn a call-up for the 2020 season.

GM - Football Graham Wright said Minchington would provide valuable depth to the side’s forward line.

“We’re excited to be able to offer Darren a place on our list in light of Will Golds’ unfortunate news,” Wright said.

“He’s a mature-aged forward who has the ability to have an impact at senior level if he is called upon.”

Prior to spending a year with the brown and gold in 2019, the 26-year-old spent seven years with St Kilda, playing 28 games and booting 22 goals.

Minchington featured for the Hawks in their hit-out against the Saints a fortnight ago where he booted two goals.
